RESUMEN

Cordycepin is considered a major bioactive component in Cordyceps militaris extract. This study was performed to evaluate the ameliorative effect of Cordyceps militaris extract (CME) and cordycepin (CPN) supplementation on intestinal damage in LPS-challenged piglets. The results showed that CPN or CME supplementation significantly increased the villus height (p < 0.01) and villus height/crypt depth ratio (p < 0.05) in the jejunum and ileum of piglets with LPS-induced intestinal inflammation. Meanwhile, CPN or CME supplementation alleviated oxidative stress and inflammatory responses by reducing the levels of MDA (p < 0.05) and pro-inflammatory cytokines in the serum. Additionally, supplementation with CPN or CME modulated the structure of the intestinal microbiota by enriching short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria, and increased the level of butyrate (p < 0.05). The RNA-seq results demonstrated that CME or CPN altered the complement and coagulation-cascade-related genes (p < 0.05), including upregulating gene KLKB1 while downregulating the genes CFD, F2RL2, CFB, C4BPA, F7, C4BPB, CFH, C3 and PROS1, which regulate the complement activation involved in inflammatory and immune responses. Correlation analysis further demonstrated the potential relation between the gut microbiota and intestinal inflammation, oxidative stress, and butyrate in piglets. In conclusion, CPN or CME supplementation might inhibit LPS-induced inflammation and oxidative stress by modulating the intestinal microbiota and its metabolite butyrate in piglets.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Research has revealed that childhood neglect may be a risk factor for problematic smartphone use among young adults in China. However, few studies have examined the mediating roles of peer attachment and the fear of missing out in the relationship between childhood neglect and problematic smartphone use. To fill this gap, the present study proposes a multiple mediation model to understand the relationships among childhood neglect, peer attachment, fear of missing out, and problematic smartphone use among young adults. METHODS: A total of 869 young adults in China completed questionnaires for evaluating different levels of the relationships between childhood neglect, peer attachment, the fear of missing out, and problematic smartphone use. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0 and MPLUS8.3. RESULTS: The results showed that childhood neglect was positively associated with problematic smartphone use among young adults in China. Moreover, peer attachment and the fear of missing out had partial mediating effects as well as sequential mediating effects in the relationship between childhood neglect and problematic smartphone use among young adults. CONCLUSION: Based on these findings, peer attachment and the fear of missing out, as mediators, could be considered proximal factors affecting problematic smartphone use among young adults. These findings broaden our understanding of the psychological processes that underlie the association between childhood neglect and problematic smartphone use and afford practical guidance on reducing the risks associated with problematic smartphone use.

RESUMEN

IMPORTANCE: Assembling a functional microbial consortium and identifying key degraders involved in the degradation of 1,4-dioxane are crucial for the design of synergistic consortia used in enhancing the bioremediation of 1,4-dioxane-contaminated sites. However, due to the vast diversity of microbes, assembling a functional consortium and identifying novel degraders through a simple method remain a challenge. In this study, we reassembled 1,4-dioxane-degrading microbial consortia using a simple and easy-to-operate method by combining dilution-to-extinction and reculture techniques. We combined differential analysis of community structure and metabolic function and confirmed that Shinella species have a stronger 1,4-dioxane degradation ability than Xanthobacter species in the enriched consortium. In addition, a new dioxane-degrading bacterium was isolated, Shinella yambaruensis, which verified our findings. These results demonstrate that DTE and reculture techniques can be used beyond diversity reduction to assemble functional microbial communities, particularly to identify key degraders in contaminant-degrading consortia.

RESUMEN

Electrowetting Display (EWD) is a new reflective display with an outstanding performance of color video playback. However, some problems still exist and affect its performance. For instance, oil backflow, oil splitting, and charge trapping phenomena may occur during the driving process of EWDs, which would decrease its stability of multi-level grayscales. Therefore, an efficient driving waveform was proposed to solve these disadvantages. It consisted of a driving stage and a stabilizing stage. First, an exponential function waveform was used in the driving stage for driving the EWDs quickly. Then, an alternating current (AC) pulse signal waveform was used in the stabilizing stage to release the trapped positive charges of the insulating layer to improve display stability. A set of four level grayscale driving waveforms were designed by using the proposed method, and it was used in comparative experiments. The experiments showed that the proposed driving waveform could mitigate oil backflow and splitting effects. Compared to a traditional driving waveform, the luminance stability was increased by 8.9%, 5.9%, 10.9%, and 11.6% for the four level grayscales after 12 s, respectively.

RESUMEN

Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is widely used for treating critically-ill patients in the emergency department in China. Anticoagulant therapy is needed to prevent clotting in the extracorporeal circulation during CRRT. Regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) has been shown to potentially be safer and more effective and is now recommended as the preferred anticoagulant method for CRRT. However, there is still a lack of unified standards for RCA management in the world, and there are many problems in using this method in clinical practice. The Emergency Medical Doctor Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association (CMDA) organized a panel of domestic emergency medicine experts and international experts of CRRT to discuss RCA-related issues, including the advantages and disadvantages of RCA in CRRT anticoagulation, the principle of RCA, parameter settings for RCA, monitoring of RCA (mainly metabolic acid-base disorders), and special issues during RCA. Based on the latest available research evidence as well as the paneled experts' clinical experience, considering the generalizability, suitability, and potential resource utilization, while also balancing clinical advantages and disadvantages, a total of 16 guideline recommendations were formed from the experts' consensus.

RESUMEN

Devising cost-effective electrochemical catalyst system for the efficient degradation of chlorinated aromatic compounds is urgently needed for environmental pollution control. Herein, a Fe-ZSM-5 zeolite was used as a suspended catalyst to facilitate the degradation of lindane as a model chlorinated pesticide in an electrochemical system consisting of the commercial DSA (Ti/RuO2-IrO2) anode and graphite cathode. It was found that the Fe-ZSM-5 zeolite greatly accelerated the degradation of lindane, with the degradation rate constant more than 8 times higher than that without Fe-ZSM-5. In addition, the Fe-ZSM-5 zeolite widened the working pH range from 3 to 11, while efficient degradation of lindane in the absence of Fe-ZSM-5 was only obtained at pH ≤ 5. The degradation of lindane was primarily due to reductive dechlorination mediated by atomic H* followed by •OH oxidation. Fe-ZSM-5 zeolite could enrich lindane, H*, and •OH on its surface, thus provided a suitable local environment for lindane degradation. The Fe-ZSM-5 zeolite exhibited high stability and reusability, and reduced the energy consumption. This research provides a potential reduction-oxidation strategy for removing organochlorine compounds through a cost-efficient Fe-ZSM-5 catalytic electrochemical system.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To examine the independent risk factors of type-2 myocardial infarction (T2MI) elicited by acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding (AUGIB), and to establish a nomogram model for the prediction of AUGIB-induced T2MI. METHODS: A nomogram model was established on the basis of a retrospective study that involved 533 patients who suffered from AUGIB in the Department of Critical Care Medicine (CCM) or Emergency Intensive Care Unit (EICU) of Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, Wuhan, China, from January 2017 to December 2020. The predictive accuracy and discriminative power of the nomogram were initially evaluated by internal validation, which involved drawing the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calculating the area under the curve (AUC), plotting the calibration curve derived from 1000 resampled bootstrap data sets, and computing the root mean square error (RMSE). The predictive ability of the nomogram was further validated through the prospective and multicenter study conducted by the investigators, which enrolled 240 AUGIB patients [including 88 cases from Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, 73 cases from Qilu Hospital of Shandong University (Qingdao), and 79 cases from Northern Jiangsu People's Hospital)], who were admitted to the Department of CCM or EICU, from February 2021 to July 2021. RESULTS: Among the 533 patients in the training cohort, 78 (14.6%) patients were assigned to the T2MI group and 455 (85.4%) patients were assigned to the non-T2MI group. The multivariate analysis revealed that age >65, hemorrhagic shock, cerebral stroke, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, increased blood urea nitrogen, decreased hematocrit, and elevated D-Dimer were independent risk factors for AUGIB-induced T2MI. All these factors were incorporated into the nomogram model. The AUC for the nomogram for predicting T2MI was 0.829 (95% CI, 0.783-0.875) in the internal validation cohort and 0.848 (95% CI, 0.794-0.902) in the external validation cohort. The calibration curve for the risk of T2MI exhibited good consistency between the prediction by the nomogram and the actual clinical observation in both the internal validation (RMSE=0.016) and external validation (RMSE=0.020). CONCLUSION: The nomogram was proven to be a useful tool for the risk stratification of T2MI in AUGIB patients, and is helpful for the early identification of AUGIB patients who are prone to T2MI for early intervention, especially in emergency departments and intensive care units.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Medical schools throughout the world were forced to modify their programming during the COVID-19 pandemic. In Malaysia, virtual learning plans were implemented for non-clinical programming, while clinical posting modifications were designed to meet local SOPs. The prolonged enforcement of these modifications to undergraduate medical education will have affected student experiences, including well-being. Since these feelings can relate to perceived relatedness, autonomy, and competence, it is important to identify any potential factors that may lead to reduced intrinsic motivation in students. It is also important to consider how demographic features may contribute to student perspectives, which can be studied using the unique diversity represented by Malaysian students. METHODS: A quantitative survey was distributed to Malaysian medical students to assess their overall wellbeing, autonomy in educational decision making, student experiences, and position on changes to graduation timing. Intrinsic components were identified using Principal Component Analysis and were aligned with the three needs for self-determination, namely relatedness, autonomy, and competence. Finally, trends in responses for participants from various sub-populations were assessed using ANOVA testing. RESULTS: Responses were collected from 442 students representing 23 accredited Malaysian medical schools. Upon validation and reliability testing, eight components were identified with themes relating to: mental health, social concerns, communication, timing of modifications, depth of learning, and student-centred learning. Of these, gender was related to mental health, student-centred learning, and delayed graduation, while stage was related to student-centred learning and delayed graduation in addition to concerns about depth of learning and timing of modifications. Interestingly, ethnicity was related to differences in opinions about delayed graduation and income was related to social concerns. CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that, while students were satisfied in general with the content and delivery of their programmes given the circumstances, there is evidence to suggest negative effects on emotional wellbeing and expression of student voice, due to the modifications that were made. Additionally, these feelings related to the three motivational needs, suggesting that students were experiencing a dampened motivational profile during the pandemic. Further, motivational profiles were distinct between student sub-groups, providing insight for developing appropriate and inclusive accommodations moving forward.

RESUMEN

The volatile products (VPs) formation from the self-degradation of l-ascorbic acid (ASA) in hot compressed water (HCW) was investigated with different reaction parameters, such as time, temperature, pH and ratio of ASA/water. The results showed that various reaction parameters had varying degrees of influence on the reaction, while the most significant effect factor was the initial pH of the solution. Furfural was the major product under acidic conditions, while furan derivatives were the main products under alkaline conditions. The above results showed that pH played the dominant role for yields and distribution of VPs in HCW. In the HCW system, the yields and classifications of VPs and conversion rate of ASA were not the same as those of VPs and ASA under traditional conditions. Based on the experimental results, the possible formation mechanism of VPs from the self-degradation of ASA was proposed in HCW.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the protective effects and underlying mechanisms of Xuebijing Injection (XBJ) on the lung endothelial barrier in hydrogen sulfide (H2S)-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to H2S (300 ppm) to establish ARDS model, while human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (HPMECs) were incubated with NaHS (a H2S donor, 500 µmol/L) to establish cell model. H2S and XBJ were concurrently administered to the rat and cell models. Lung hematoxylin and eosin staining, immunohistochemistry, transmission electron microscopy and wet/dry ratio measurement were used to confirm ARDS induced by H2S in vivo. The expression levels of claudin-5, phosphorylated protein kinase B (p-AKT)/t-AKT and p-forkhead box transcription factor O1 (FoxO1)/t-FoxO1 in vivo and in vitro were also assessed. Paracellular permeability and transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) were measured to evaluate endothelial barrier function in the cell model. RESULTS: The morphological investigation showed that XBJ attenuated H2S-induced ARDS in rats. XBJ significantly ameliorated both the reduction in TEER and the increased paracellular permeability observed in NaHS-treated HPMECs (P<0.05). The protective effects of XBJ were blocked by LY294002, a phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT/FoxO1 pathway antagonist (P<0.05). Furthermore, XBJ promoted the expression of claudin-5 and increased the levels of p-AKT and p-FoxO1 in vivo and in vitro (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: XBJ ameliorated H2S-induced ARDS by promoting claudin-5 expression via the PI3K/AKT/FoxO1 signaling pathway.

RESUMEN

Aiming at the problem of indoor environment, signal non-line-of-sight propagation and other factors affect the accuracy of indoor locating, an algorithm of indoor fingerprint localization based on the eight-neighborhood template is proposed. Based on the analysis of the signal strength of adjacent reference points in the fingerprint database, the methods for the eight-neighborhood template matching and generation were studied. In this study, the indoor environment was divided into four quadrants for each access point and the expected values of the received signal strength indication (RSSI) difference between the center points and their eight-neighborhoods in different quadrants were chosen as the generation parameters. Then different templates were generated for different access points, and the unknown point was located by the Euclidean distance for the correlation of RSSI between each template and its coverage area in the fingerprint database. With the spatial correlation of fingerprint data taken into account, the influence of abnormal fingerprint on locating accuracy is reduced. The experimental results show that the locating error is 1.0 m, which is about 0.2 m less than both K-nearest neighbor (KNN) and weighted K-nearest neighbor (WKNN) algorithms.

RESUMEN

In recent years, many methods of exfiltrating information from air-gapped systems, including electromagnetic, thermal, acoustic and optical covert channels, have been proposed. However, as a typical optical channel, the screen-camera method has rarely been considered; it is less covert because it is visible to humans. In this paper, inspired by the rapid upgrades of cameras and monitors, we propose an air-gapped screen-camera covert channel with decreased perceptibility that is suitable for complex content. Our method exploits the characteristics of the human vision system (HVS) and embeds quick response (QR) codes containing sensitive data in the displayed frames. This slight modification of the frames cannot be sensed by the HVS but can be recorded by the cameras. Then, using certain image processing techniques, we reconstruct the QR codes to some degree and extract the secret data with a certain level of robustness due to the error correction capacity of QR codes. In the scenario to which our method applies, we assume that a program has been installed in the target system and has the authority to modify the frames without affecting the normal operations of valid users. Cameras, such as web cameras, surveillance cameras and smartphone cameras, can be receivers in our method. We illustrate the applicability of our method to frames with complex content using several different cover images. Experiments involving different angles between the screen and the camera were conducted to highlight the feasibility of our method with angles of $ 0^{\circ}, 15^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ} $.

RESUMEN

In practice, most audio files such as MP3 and AAC are stored and transmitted in the form of compressed files, which can serve as the cover in audio steganography. Currently, the prevailing audio steganography methods are not ideal because of the drawbacks. Some are characterized by low capacity while others are irreversible. In this paper, we propose a method to embed secret messages in MP3 encoding. Our strategy is to hide the information by Huffman table transformation. We extract secret information by analyzing side information. Experimental results show that our method can greatly improve the steganographic capacity with low distortion and high security. Meanwhile, it featured with higher decoding rate and reversible over some state-of-the-art methods.

RESUMEN

This network meta-analysis is adopted in order to compare the toxicity of different chemotherapy regimens in the treatment of advanced/metastatic pancreatic cancer (PC). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) about different chemotherapy regimens for advanced/metastatic PC were included in this network meta-analysis using Cochrane Library and PubMed electronic databases. The network meta-analysis was performed to combine direct and indirect evidence in order to calculate the odd ratios (OR) and draw a surface under the cumulative ranking (SUCRA) curve. A total of 19 RCTs were enrolled in this network meta-analysis including 12 chemotherapy regimens (Gemcitabine, Gemcitabine + S-1 [tegafur], Gemcitabine + nab-paclitaxel, Gemcitabine + Capecitabine, Gemcitabine + Cisplatin, FOLFIRINOX [oxaliplatin + irinotecan + fluorouracil + leucovorin], Gemcitabine + oxaliplatin, Gemcitabine + irinotecan, Gemcitabine + Exatecan, Gemcitabine + pemetrexed, Gemcitabine + 5-FU, S-1). The incidence of anemia of Gemcitabine + Capecitabine regimen was higher compared with Gemcitabine regimen, Gemcitabine + pemetrexed regimen exhibited the highest incidence rates of anemia and neutropenia; while Gemcitabine + S-1, Gemcitabine + Cisplatin and FOLFIRINOX regimens exhibited the highest incidence rates of neutropenia. However, S-1 regimen exhibited lower incidence rates of leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. Moreover, the incidence rates of nausea/vomiting and rash of Gemcitabine + S-1 regimen were higher compared with Gemcitabine regimen, while Gemcitabine + Cisplatin regimen had the highest incidence rate of nausea/vomiting. This study demonstrated that the hematologic toxicity of S-1 regimen was the lowest, while Gemcitabine regimen exhibited the lowest incidence rate of non-hematologic toxicity, providing guidance for the treatment of advanced/metastatic PC.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the status of anemia among children under 3 years old from western China based on the data gathered from the project area. METHODS: 9616 children under 3 years old and their families were investigated, using stratified random sampling method in 46 counties in western China. To measure the content of haemoglobin by cyanmethemoglobin and hemocue, under the diagnostic criterion as 110 g/L for child aged 6 months to 6 years old, proposed by WHO and UNICEF. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of anemia among child under 3 years old in ten provinces was 33.8%. Prevalence of anemia varied along with age differences. The peak of anemia prevalence was 12-18 months. The related risk of anemia between mother and child was 3.271. Data from logistic regression showed that mother being anemic, cooking with iron pan, cooking for child separate from adults and gender had statistical significance to their children's anemia. CONCLUSION: The feasible measures should be developed to reduce the prevalence of anemia.
